You've Been Chasing the Wrong Definition of "Perfect" Your Whole Life

What if the problem isn't that you're imperfect... but that your definition of perfect is

woman running toward perfection but can't reach it

For years, I wrestled with the idea of perfection.

I grew up believing that if I did everything right—if I was good enough, spiritual enough, kind enough, obedient enough—then life would work out the way it was supposed to.

I'm not criticizing my religious upbringing. I'm simply recognizing the belief system I carried away from it.

Somewhere along the way, "perfect" became a checklist.

Perfect meant:

  • Every hair in place.

  • A spotless house.

  • Clothes without wrinkles or stains.

  • Being early to everything.

  • Never disappointing anyone.

  • Saying yes when I really wanted to say no.

  • Keeping the peace, even if it meant abandoning myself.

Maybe you've carried some version of that too.

The problem is, those standards never end.

The closer you get, the more the finish line moves.

Instead of creating peace, perfection creates pressure.

But Who Defined Perfect?

Have you ever stopped to ask that question?

Who decided what perfect is?

Who decided a tree is only perfect when it's green?

In the fall, its leaves become brilliant shades of gold, orange, and red.

A few weeks later, they're brown.

tree losing its leaves is nature perfection

Then they're gone.

All winter long, the tree stands there looking lifeless.

Yet no one walks through the forest saying,

"Look at that imperfect tree."

We instinctively know what's happening.

The tree is doing exactly what trees are designed to do.

Each season is perfect for the season it's in.

So why don't we offer ourselves the same grace?

The Trap of Comparison

Today we're surrounded by highlight reels.

Beautiful vacations.

Perfect kitchens.

Happy marriages.

Successful businesses.

Smiling family photos.

It's a little like Christmas cards.

Most people don't send one saying,

"We argued all year, the washing machine broke twice, someone lost their job, and the dog ate the couch."

Instead...

Everyone smiles.

Click.

Merry Christmas.

There's nothing wrong with celebrating life's beautiful moments.

The problem comes when we compare someone else's carefully selected moments with our ordinary Tuesday morning.

No wonder we feel like we're falling short.

What If This Moment Is Already Perfect?

Notice I'm not suggesting we stop growing.

I still brush my messy morning hair.

I still shower.

I still clean my house.

I still want to become healthier, kinder, wiser, and stronger.

Growth is wonderful.

But there's a huge difference between improving because you value yourself...

...and improving because you believe you're not enough.

One creates freedom.

The other creates exhaustion.

Nature Doesn't Fight the Seasons

Life keeps moving.

It's like a river.

The water flows over rocks.

Around rocks.

Sometimes it moves the rocks.

Sometimes it slowly carves an entirely new path.

But it never stops flowing because today's river doesn't look like yesterday's.

We are part of that same flow.

Some days we're thriving.

Some days we're healing.

Some days we're resting.

Some days we're grieving.

Every one of those seasons belongs.

A New Definition of Perfect

Maybe perfect doesn't mean flawless.

Maybe perfect means exactly what this moment needs to be.

This moment is perfect because it's real.

It's where life is happening.

And from this moment...

Change is always possible.

The next moment will be different.

And the next.

Life keeps flowing.

So maybe the question isn't whether you'll ever become perfect.

Maybe the better question is...

Can you stop fighting the season you're in long enough to learn what it's trying to teach you?

So let me ask you...

quote your definition of perfect is the problem

Perhaps the peace you've been searching for isn't found in becoming perfect.

Perhaps it's found in realizing...

You never had to be.

You're Not Broken – You're Blocked.

So let me ask you…

👉 What might be possible if what's in the way… was removed?

Common Questions About Embracing Perfectionism

What does it really mean to be perfect?

Perfect doesn't have to mean flawless. It can mean exactly what this moment needs to be — the way a tree in winter isn't imperfect, it's simply in a different season of the same perfect design.

Why does comparing myself to others make me feel like I'm falling short?

Because most of what we see from other people is a highlight reel — the carefully selected moments — while we compare it to our own ordinary, unfiltered Tuesday morning. That comparison was never a fair one to begin with.

Is it bad to want to grow and improve myself?

No. Growth is wonderful. The difference is whether you're improving because you value yourself, or improving because you believe you're not enough. One creates freedom. The other creates exhaustion.

How do I stop feeling pressure to be perfect?

Start by asking who defined "perfect" in the first place. Every season of life — thriving, healing, resting, grieving — belongs. Peace tends to come not from becoming perfect, but from realizing you never had to be.
